Susanna Clarke

Susanna Clarke (born 1959 in Nottingham) is an English novelist. She spent about ten years writing Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, a novel of nineteenth-century English magic published by Bloomsbury in 2004, which won both the Hugo Award and the World Fantasy Award for best novel in 2005; the short-story collection The Ladies of Grace Adieu followed in 2006. Chronic fatigue syndrome then interrupted her work for more than a decade, until Piranesi appeared in 2020 and won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2021. In 2024 she published The Wood at Midwinter, a short illustrated fable set in the world of her first novel.
