Sarah Waters

Sarah Waters is a British novelist, born on 21 July 1966 in Neyland, Wales. She holds a doctorate in English literature and sets most of her fiction in Victorian or post-war Britain, with lesbian characters at its centre. Her first novel, Tipping the Velvet (1998), was adapted by the BBC in 2002; it was followed by Affinity (1999), Fingersmith (2002) — filmed by Park Chan-wook as The Handmaiden in 2016 — The Night Watch (2006), The Little Stranger (2009) and The Paying Guests (2014). She has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times, and her novels appear in the United Kingdom under the Virago imprint.
