Salman Rushdie is a British-Indian novelist and essayist, born on 19 June 1947 in Bombay. Educated at Rugby School and King's College, Cambridge, he began his career as an advertising copywriter in London before publishing his first novel, Grimus, in 1975. Midnight's Children (1981) won the Booker Prize and later the Booker of Bookers. His novel The Satanic Verses (1988) drew a fatwa that forced him into years of hiding. He was knighted in 2007. His many works include Shame, The Moor's Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet and Victory City; his memoir Knife (2024) recounts the 2022 attack in which he lost an eye.
