Lyman Frank Baum, who signed his books L. Frank Baum, was born on 15 May 1856 in Chittenango, New York, and died on 6 May 1919 in Los Angeles. A journalist, actor, poultry breeder and later a theatre producer, he published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900, the first of the fourteen Oz novels he wrote. In 1914 he founded the Oz Film Manufacturing Company to bring his stories to the screen. His world has been adapted for the stage, the cinema and comics long after his death.
