Lady Saba Holland

Saba, Lady Holland (1802-1866), born Saba Smith, was the eldest daughter of the clergyman and wit Sydney Smith, and the second wife of the physician Sir Henry Holland. After her father died in 1845 and her mother in 1852, she took up her mother's wish that his life be written, and reluctantly compiled A Memoir of the Reverend Sydney Smith, published in two volumes in 1855 with a selection of his letters edited by Sarah Austin. Her portrait of him as a country parson and family man, rather than as the Whig society figure London remembered, shaped how he was read for a century. She is buried in her father's grave at Kensal Green.
