Jonathan Franzen is an American novelist and essayist, born in 1959 in Western Springs, Illinois, and raised in Webster Groves, Missouri. He came to wide attention with The Corrections (2001), winner of the National Book Award, followed by Freedom (2010), Purity (2015) and Crossroads (2021), the first volume of a projected trilogy. A frequent contributor to The New Yorker, he is also an essayist and a keen birdwatcher whose interest in nature recurs across his nonfiction.
