John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist and painter. Born in Saint-Domingue and raised in France, he settled in the United States in 1803 and set out to paint every bird of North America from life. The result, The Birds of America, was engraved and hand-coloured between 1827 and 1838: 435 life-size plates, still among the most celebrated works of natural history illustration. He described the birds themselves in the accompanying Ornithological Biography, and kept journals of his travels from Labrador to New Orleans.
