Ian McEwan is a British novelist, born on 21 June 1948 in Aldershot, England. He first drew notice with short stories and short, unsettling novels such as The Cement Garden (1978), then moved to broader canvases. He won the Booker Prize in 1998 for Amsterdam. His books include The Child in Time (1987), Enduring Love (1997), Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), On Chesil Beach (2007), The Children Act (2014), Machines Like Me (2019) and Lessons (2022); his eighteenth novel, What We Can Know, was published in September 2025. His work appears in the United Kingdom under the Jonathan Cape imprint.
