Henry George (1839-1897) was an American political economist and social reformer. His best-known book, Progress and Poverty (1879), argued that the wealth generated by economic progress was captured disproportionately by landowners through rising land rents, and proposed a single tax on land values to fund public expenditure. The book became a global bestseller and inspired the Georgist movement. George also wrote Social Problems (1883), Protection or Free Trade and The Science of Political Economy, and ran twice for mayor of New York City.
