Evan Gershkovich

Evan Gershkovich is an American journalist, born on 26 October 1991 in Princeton, New Jersey, to parents who had emigrated from the Soviet Union. He reported from Russia for The Moscow Times and Agence France-Presse before joining The Wall Street Journal in 2022. Arrested in Yekaterinburg on 29 March 2023 and accused of espionage — a charge his newspaper and the United States government always rejected — he spent sixteen months in detention and was released on 1 August 2024 in a prisoner exchange. His account of those years, This Cursed Beautiful Land, is published by Crown in September 2026.
