Dany Laferrière

Dany Laferrière was born on 13 April 1953 in Port-au-Prince. He worked as a journalist for Radio Haïti Inter and the weekly Le Petit Samedi soir before leaving Haiti for Montreal in June 1976, after a fellow reporter, Gasner Raymond, was murdered. His first novel appeared in 1985 as “Comment faire l’amour avec un nègre sans se fatiguer”, published in English as “How to Make Love to a Negro Without Getting Tired”; among the books that followed are “L’Odeur du café” (1991), “Pays sans chapeau” (1996), “Je suis un écrivain japonais” (2008) and “L’Énigme du retour” (2009), which won the Prix Médicis. He also writes and directs for the screen. Elected to the Académie française on 12 December 2013 to seat 2 — the first Haitian and the first Canadian to sit there — he was received on 28 May 2015.
