Atul Gawande is an American surgeon and writer, born in 1965 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Stanford, at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and at Harvard Medical School and Harvard's School of Public Health. A general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital and professor at Harvard, he has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1998 and was Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID under President Biden from 2022 to 2025. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2006. His books include Complications (2002), Better (2007), The Checklist Manifesto (2009) and Being Mortal (2014).
