Arthur Scott Bailey (1877-1949) was an American author of children's books, born in St. Albans, Vermont. Between 1915 and the 1930s he wrote dozens of short animal stories for young readers, gathered in linked series such as Sleepy-Time Tales, Tuck-Me-In Tales and Slumber-Town Tales. Each little book follows one creature of farm, wood or meadow - Cuffy Bear, Frisky Squirrel, Mrs. Ladybug, Old Dog Spot - in gentle, gently comic episodes. His tales were widely reprinted and remain in print through public-domain editions.
