Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi was a French-Iranian graphic novelist and film director, born in Rasht in 1969 and died in Paris in 2026. She grew up in Tehran, was sent at fourteen to the French lycée in Vienna, and settled in France in 1994, studying at the school of decorative arts in Strasbourg. Between 2000 and 2003 she published the four volumes of “Persepolis”, an autobiographical account of her childhood under the Islamic revolution, followed by “Embroideries” (2003) and “Chicken with Plums” (2004). She co-directed the animated film of “Persepolis” with Vincent Paronnaud, which won the Cannes jury prize in 2007 and two Césars, and went on to direct “The Voices” (2014) and “Radioactive” (2019). She received the Princess of Asturias Award in 2024.
