Louise Erdrich

American novelist and poet of Ojibwe and German-American descent, born in Little Falls, Minnesota, in 1954 and an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. Erdrich studied at Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins and made her name with Love Medicine (1984), the first in a cycle of interconnected novels set on and around a fictional North Dakota reservation. Her many novels include The Round House, which won the National Book Award in 2012, and The Night Watchman, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2021. She also writes poetry, essays and children's books, and runs the independent bookstore Birchbark Books in Minneapolis.
