English Anglican priest, theologian and social reformer, born near Ledbury in 1847 and died at Oxford in 1918. A student of Christ Church, Oxford, he was made a canon of St Paul's Cathedral in 1884 and Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford in 1911. He is remembered above all for the passage beginning "Death is nothing at all", taken from a sermon he preached at St Paul's in 1910 after the death of Edward VII. With the musicologist William Smith Rockstro he wrote the two-volume Memoir of Madame Jenny Lind-Goldschmidt, published in 1891.
