Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki (born 5 January 1941 in Tokyo) is a Japanese animator, film director and manga author. He joined Toei Animation in 1963 and co-founded Studio Ghibli in June 1985 with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki. His main work in print is the manga “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”, serialised in Animage from 1982 to 1994 and collected in seven volumes, followed by the illustrated tale “Shuna’s Journey” (1983). His other books are largely film comics drawn from his features — “Castle in the Sky”, “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Ponyo”. “Spirited Away” (2001) and “The Boy and the Heron” (2023) both won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and he received an Honorary Award in 2014.
