Joseph Henry Green

Joseph Henry Green (1791-1863) was an English surgeon and philosopher. He operated and taught at St Thomas's Hospital, held the chair of surgery at King's College London, lectured in anatomy to the Royal Academy, and served as president of the Royal College of Surgeons. He met Samuel Taylor Coleridge around 1817 and became his closest philosophical disciple; Coleridge named him his literary executor in 1834, charging him with setting out his system of thought. Green worked at it for the rest of his life without finishing it. Sir John Simon edited the result and published it in 1865, two years after Green's death, as the two volumes of Spiritual Philosophy.
