Gerber, Steve

Steve Gerber (1947-2008) was an American comic book writer, born in St. Louis and one of the most idiosyncratic voices of Marvel's 1970s. He wrote Man-Thing, The Defenders, Daredevil and Marvel Two-in-One, created Omega the Unknown and the Foolkiller, and in 1973 invented Howard the Duck, who got his own satirical series. His 1980 lawsuit against Marvel over the ownership of the character was settled in 1982; while it ran he made Destroyer Duck with Jack Kirby to pay for it. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2010 and received the Bill Finger Award in 2013.
