Elizabeth Strout (born 1956 in Portland, Maine) is an American novelist. She trained as a lawyer at Syracuse University before turning to fiction, and published her first novel, Amy and Isabelle, in 1998. Olive Kitteridge, a sequence of linked stories set on the Maine coast, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2009 and was followed by Olive, Again in 2019. Most of her later books orbit the same New England characters, in particular the Lucy Barton novels: My Name Is Lucy Barton (2016), Oh William! (2021, shortlisted for the Booker Prize), Lucy by the Sea (2022) and Tell Me Everything (2024). The Things We Never Say (2026) was longlisted for the Booker Prize.
