Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898) was a Swiss poet and writer of historical fiction, writing in German. He came late to literature and won recognition with the verse epic Huttens letzte Tage and, above all, with tautly built historical novellas set in the Renaissance and the Reformation: Jürg Jenatsch, The Monk's Wedding (Die Hochzeit des Mönchs), The Temptation of Pescara and The Sufferings of a Boy. His spare, chiselled prose and his lyric poetry place him among the leading German-language writers of the later nineteenth century.
