Art Spiegelman is an American comics artist, born on 15 February 1948 in Stockholm to Polish-Jewish parents who survived the Holocaust. He worked for Topps, where he created “Garbage Pail Kids”, and drew for Playboy, before co-founding the magazine “RAW” with Françoise Mouly in 1980. It serialised “Maus”, his autobiographical account of his father's deportation, in which Jews are drawn as mice and Nazis as cats; published in two volumes by Pantheon (1986, 1991), it was awarded a Special Pulitzer Prize in 1992, the first ever given to a graphic novel. He also wrote “In the Shadow of No Towers” (2004), a response to the attacks of 11 September.
