British novelist and essayist, born in London in 1975 to an English father and a Jamaican mother. Smith read English at King's College, Cambridge, and made her name in 2000 with White Teeth, a portrait of multicultural London that won the Guardian First Book Award and the Whitbread First Novel Award. Her later novels include The Autograph Man (2002), On Beauty (2005, Orange Prize), NW (2012), Swing Time (2016) and the historical novel The Fraud (2023). She has also published short stories (Grand Union), a play (The Wife of Willesden) and several essay collections. Smith is a tenured professor of creative writing at New York University.
