Mark Lawrence is a fantasy novelist, born in 1966 in the United States and raised in England. He holds a degree in physics and a PhD in mathematics, and worked for many years as a research scientist in artificial intelligence. He made his debut in 2011 with “Prince of Thorns”, the first volume of the Broken Empire trilogy, completed by “King of Thorns” (2012) and “Emperor of Thorns” (2013), which won the David Gemmell award for best fantasy novel in 2014. He went on to write The Red Queen's War, Book of the Ancestor, Impossible Times and the Library Trilogy, opened by “The Book That Wouldn't Burn” (2023). Since 2015 he has run the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, a competition for self-published fantasy.
