Fred Vargas is the pen name of Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau, a French crime novelist born in Paris in 1957. An archaeozoologist by training and a doctor of history, she spent some fifteen years as a researcher at the CNRS, specialising in the medieval plague. In 1991 she published “L'Homme aux cercles bleus”, the first of eleven novels featuring Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, several of which have appeared in English as “The Chalk Circle Man”, “Have Mercy on Us All” and “This Night's Foul Work”. She also wrote the Three Evangelists trilogy (1995-1997) and two essays on the ecological crisis. She won the Duncan Lawrie International Dagger twice and the Princess of Asturias Award in 2018.
