Matilda Joslyn Gage

Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826-1898) was an American suffragist, abolitionist and freethinker. Active in the women's movement from the 1850s, she served as president of the National Woman Suffrage Association and later founded the Woman's National Liberal Union. With Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony she compiled the first three volumes of History of Woman Suffrage (1881-1886), the movement's own record of its early decades, and she wrote Woman, Church and State (1893), a study of the place of women in religious and civil law. She was the mother-in-law of L. Frank Baum.
