Herman Friedrich Grimm

Herman Grimm (1828-1901) was a German art historian, essayist and biographer, the son of Wilhelm Grimm and nephew of Jacob. He held the first chair of art history at the University of Berlin and wrote widely read lives of Michelangelo, Raphael and Goethe. A long correspondent and admirer of Ralph Waldo Emerson, he introduced Emerson's essays to German readers; several of his own essays were translated into English by Sarah Holland Adams and collected under the title Literature.
