Tommy Orange is an American novelist and a citizen of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. Born in Oakland, California, in 1982, he holds an MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts and teaches in its creative writing program. His debut novel, There There (2018), follows twelve Native characters converging on a pow wow in Oakland; it won the American Book Award and the PEN/Hemingway Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award, and became a New York Times bestseller. His second novel, Wandering Stars (2024), extends the family history at the heart of There There from the nineteenth century to today.
