Junji Ito

Junji Ito, born 31 July 1963 in Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, is a Japanese manga artist known for horror. He trained and worked as a dental technician before submitting a short story to the magazine Monthly Halloween in 1987, which earned an honourable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize; that story grew into "Tomie", serialised until 2000. His best-known books are "Uzumaki" (1998-99), "Gyo" (2001-02), "Hellstar Remina" (2004-05) and "Sensor" (2018-19), alongside a large body of short stories published in Nemuki and Halloween. He has received several Eisner Awards, including one in 2019 for his adaptation of "Frankenstein". His work has been adapted as the animated anthologies "Junji Ito Collection" (2018) and "Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre" (2023).
