Jonathan Coe is a British novelist, born in Bromsgrove in 1961 and educated at Cambridge. He is known for satirical novels that weave private lives into the political history of postwar Britain. What a Carve Up! (1994) skewered Thatcher-era England; The Rotters' Club (2001) and its sequel The Closed Circle followed a group of Birmingham schoolfriends, and Middle England (2018) returned to them in the years around the Brexit vote, winning the Costa Novel Award and the European Book Prize. His many books also include The House of Sleep, The Rain Before It Falls, Expo 58 and Mr Wilder and Me. Widely translated, he has an especially large readership in France and Italy and has won the Prix Médicis étranger.
