Henning Mankell was a Swedish novelist and playwright, born in Stockholm in 1948 and died in Gothenburg in 2015. He divided his life between Sweden and Mozambique, where from 1985 he ran the Teatro Avenida in Maputo. In 1991 he published “Faceless Killers”, the first of the Kurt Wallander crime novels, a series of about a dozen titles that made the small town of Ystad, in southern Sweden, one of the best-known settings in European crime fiction. He also wrote for young readers, including the four-book Joel Gustafsson cycle (1991-1998) and stories set in southern Africa, as well as many stage plays. He was married to Eva Bergman, daughter of the film-maker Ingmar Bergman.
