Glen Cook, born in New York City in 1944, is an American writer of fantasy and science fiction. He served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1972 and spent most of his writing years working on a General Motors assembly line, publishing around his shifts before turning to fiction full time. He is best known for The Black Company, begun in 1984, a war sequence narrated from the ranks of a mercenary outfit hired by both sides of a long conflict, and for the Garrett P.I. novels, which place a hardboiled private detective in a fantasy city. He is also the author of the Dread Empire, Starfishers and Instrumentalities of the Night sequences.
