George Saunders is an American writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books, born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1958. Trained as a geophysical engineer at the Colorado School of Mines before earning an M.F.A. at Syracuse University, he has taught in the Syracuse creative writing program since 1997. His short-story collections include CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, Pastoralia, In Persuasion Nation, Tenth of December (Folio Prize, 2014) and Liberation Day. His first novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, won the Man Booker Prize in 2017. He is also the author of A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, essays on the Russian short story, and a 2006 MacArthur Fellow.
