Elizabeth Acevedo is an American poet and novelist of Dominican origin, born in New York in 1988 and raised in Harlem. A National Poetry Slam champion before she was a novelist, she rose to attention with The Poet X (2018), a novel in verse about a Dominican teenager who finds her voice through slam poetry, which won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, the Michael L. Printz Award, the Carnegie Medal and the Pura Belpré Award. She has since published With the Fire on High and Clap When You Land, both for young readers, the poetry collection Beastgirl & Other Origin Myths, and her first novel for adults, Family Lore (2023), a story of four Dominican-American sisters.
