E. L. James

E. L. James is the pen name of Erika Mitchell, a British novelist born on 7 March 1963 in Willesden, north London. After university she worked as a studio manager's assistant at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, then in television. From 2009 she wrote Twilight fan fiction online under the name Snowqueens Icedragon, and reworked it into the Fifty Shades trilogy (2011-2012). She retold the same story from Christian Grey's point of view in a second trilogy (2015, 2017, 2021), then published The Mister (2019) and The Missus (2023). She produced the three film adaptations released between 2015 and 2018.
