Denise Mina is a Scottish crime novelist, born on 21 August 1966 in East Kilbride. She had an itinerant childhood, following her father's oil-industry work across Europe, and worked in bars, a meat factory and as an auxiliary nurse before studying law at the University of Glasgow and beginning a PhD on mental illness and female offenders. Her first novel, “Garnethill” (1998), won the CWA John Creasey Award for best debut and opened a Glasgow trilogy around Maureen O'Donnell. She went on to write the Paddy Meehan novels, following a young journalist, and the Alex Morrow police series. She has also written for comics — a run on “Hellblazer” and graphic-novel adaptations of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy — and standalone novels including “The Long Drop” (2017) and “The Less Dead” (2020).
