American young-adult novelist, born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1988. A former teen rapper, Thomas holds a BFA in creative writing from Belhaven University. Her debut novel The Hate U Give (2017), inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, spent years on the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted for film in 2018. She returned to the Garden Heights setting with the companion novel On the Come Up (2019) and the prequel Concrete Rose (2021), both also #1 New York Times bestsellers. She has since published Nic Blake and the Remarkables, a middle-grade fantasy series that opened with The Manifestor Prophecy (2023).
